Sore Nipples: Causes and Treatment
What causes sore nipples?
Experiencing sore nipples can be uncomfortable, and there are various potential causes for this condition. While some causes may be minor, others could be surprising. It is crucial to pay attention to your own symptoms and seek appropriate care.
Some possible causes of sore nipples are:
- Hormonal changes: The menstrual cycle can lead to various symptoms including sore nipples. Hormonal fluctuations during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause can cause breast tenderness and sore nipples.
- Breastfeeding: Sore nipples are common among breastfeeding mothers, often due to improper latching or positioning of the baby during feeding.
- Infection: Infections such as thrush (yeast infection) or mastitis (infection of the breast tissue) can cause nipple soreness and discomfort.
- Allergies: Allergic reactions to soaps, lotions, laundry detergents, or clothing materials can cause nipple soreness.
- Friction: Friction is the most common reason for sore nipples, and it can happen if the nipples rub against a shirt or poorly-fitting bra during sports activities like running, surfing, or basketball. This is known as “jogger’s nipple”. Friction on the nipple can lead to soreness, stinging pain, or bleeding. The skin may be dry or chapped.
- Breast cancer or Paget’s disease: Nipple pain and other symptoms can be a sign of underlying issues like cancer. Around half of women diagnosed with Paget’s disease of the nipple may have a lump behind the nipple.
How are sore nipples diagnosed?
Diagnosing sore nipples typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and sometimes additional tests.
If you are breastfeeding and experiencing sore nipples, your doctor may assess the latch and positioning of your baby during breastfeeding to identify any issues contributing to the soreness.
Depending on your symptoms and medical history, your doctor may recommend additional tests, such as:
- Mammogram: An X-ray of the breast tissue to look for any abnormalities, such as cysts or tumours.
- Breast ultrasound: Uses sound waves to produce images of the breast tissue, which can help identify any underlying issues, such as cysts or infections.
- Breast biopsy: Involves taking a small sample of breast tissue to examine it under a microscope for signs of cancer or other abnormalities.
- Blood tests: May be done to check for hormonal imbalances or signs of infection.
- Cultures: If an infection is suspected, a culture of nipple discharge or skin swab may be taken to identify the causative organism.
How to treat sore nipples?
Wearing a well-fitted sports bra made of smooth synthetic fabrics can indeed help prevent sore nipples caused by friction, especially during activities like running or intense workouts.Using protective products such as rash guards, nipple shields, or surgical tape can provide an extra layer of protection and reduce friction against the nipples. Certain creams, ointments, or moisturizers may also be helpful in reducing friction and soothing sore nipples, but it is essential to choose products that are safe and suitable for the sensitive skin around the nipple area.Breastfeeding mothers are encouraged to consult the doctor to help their babies establish healthy feeding patterns.Minor cases of nipple eczema can often be managed with a topical anti-inflammatory cream. However, it is crucial to consult a doctor if the rash or redness worsens, spreads, or does not respond to over-the-counter treatment.Nipple soreness due to menstruation or pregnancy can treated with over-the-counter pain relievers or a hot pack. Breast cancer is often treated through surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. When to see your doctor for sore nipples?
If nipple pain persists, it is important to consult a doctor. Persistent nipple pain can be a sign of underlying issues such as infection, allergy, dermatitis, or other conditions that require medical attention.
