What is Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)?

An Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is a safe and non-invasive diagnostic tool used to visualise the lining and walls of the GI tract and neighbouring organs including the pancreas, liver and gallbladder. It uses a thin and flexible tube, called an endoscope, which is inserted into the mouth or the anus. Endoscopic Ultrasound generates enhanced and detailed images of the digestive tract, and allows the evaluation of Gastrointestinal abnormalities.

Your doctor might recommend Endoscopic Ultrasound examination to evaluate and diagnose the causes of your persistent abdominal pain or your abnormal weight loss. It can also be used to determine the stages of cancer, to examine gallstones or liver tumours and to study other abnormal growths in the bile duct.

Doctors also use Endoscopic Ultrasound to evaluate diseases affecting the pancreas including chronic pancreatitis, and to determine the causes of bowel incontinence (loss of bowel control).

Endoscopic Ultrasound is also used to study previously diagnosed lumps or lesions. Your doctor can use Endoscopic Ultrasound to obtain tissue samples to examine these lumps and lesions in order to determine their origin and therefore choose the best treatment for you.
