Capsule endoscopy is a painless and non-invasive diagnostic tool that travels within the body and captures images of the small intestine. The tool comes in a form of a pill where a wireless camera is encapsulated. The pill is usually swallowed and travels along the oesophagus, stomach and into the small intestine. As it travels, the camera captures tens of thousands of images recorded on a hard disk worn as a belt by the patient. The pill is then extracted from the faeces and the images will then be examined by the doctor to determine any disorders or abnormalities of the small intestine.
Capsule Endoscopy is useful in determining any abnormalities or locate the source of bleeding in the small intestine. It is also used to diagnose any tumours or inflammatory bowel disease. The doctor will also use this method to find out the cause of symptoms such as frequent and chronic abdominal pain or diarrhoea.
