Anxiety disorders are more extreme levels of anxiety experienced by the sufferer that it negatively affects their ability to function (work, school, social and other daily activities.

They frequently experience difficulty in controlling their anxiety that it also affects their quality of life and sleep.

It can also be disabling to the sufferer with anxiety disorders that it impairs their ability to work and study.

Symptoms

  • Excessive & difficulty in controlling worry
  • Restlessness and tension
  • Insomnia
  • Physical symptoms – headaches, chest discomfort, palpitations (heart racing), aches and pains, diarrhea, gastric, dizziness, hypertension
  • Impaired ability to concentrate and focus
  • Avoidance of the fearful situations which will limit the persons ability to function

Both medications and counselling or psychotherapy

Functional brain imagings have shown that the brain is hyperactive in the fight or flight center (the Amygdala) and antidepressants medications can help to alleviate these symptoms.

Complications

Anxiety can also lead to depression and both can cause disability in the person.
