Learn why rubella is a concern for pregnant women and how Pantai Hospitals can help protect the health of mothers and babies.

What Is Rubella?

Rubella, or German measles, is a viral infection caused by the rubella virus. The virus is usually transmitted when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

What Are the Symptoms of Rubella?

Symptoms of rubella are usually mild and can include:

  • Rash that starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body
  • Mild fever
  • Mild conjunctivitis
  • Sore throat

After exposure, the virus takes about two to three weeks before symptoms appear. The person is most contagious from about one to five days after the rash appears.

While generally mild, especially in children, rubella can have serious implications if contracted by pregnant women, as it can lead to congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) in the developing baby.

How Does Rubella Affect Pregnancy?

The effects of rubella in pregnancy can be serious.

Infection with the rubella virus during pregnancy, especially early in pregnancy can cause Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS), which results in birth defects such as heart problems, visual impairment, and developmental delays. Therefore, women are advised to receive the rubella vaccine before planning pregnancy to avoid these risks and take appropriate preventive measures.

Additionally, rubella can affect pregnant women psychologically. Anxiety and worry about possible complications for the unborn baby can affect the mother’s mental well-being. Therefore, it is important for pregnant women to communicate with their healthcare providers to get accurate information and reduce these concerns.

What Should I Do If I am Exposed to Rubella During Pregnancy?

If you are exposed to rubella during pregnancy, it is important to consult your doctor immediately due to the potential risks to the baby.
