Digital Subtraction Angiography is an examination that provides images of the lumen (inner surface) of the blood vessels including the arteries, veins and the heart chambers. These images are obtained using complex computerised X-Ray machines. A special contrast medium or ‘dye’ (high density clear liquid) is usually injected to make the blood supply to the legs, heart or other organs easy to see.
This examination technique is commonly used to diagnose a variety of blood vessel diseases. You may need to undergo Digital Subtraction Angiography to diagnose obstructive vascular diseases that are caused by blockages or narrowing in the lumen of arteries and veins. Your doctor may also request a Digital Subtraction Angiography to diagnose a Brain Aneurysm (especially Intracranial Aneurysm), bleeding vessels, Arterio-Venous malformations (abnormal connections between arteries and veins), and to assess the vascularity of cancerous tumours. Angiography also provides a visual guide for interventional procedures needed to unblock or re-open occluded arteries such as Angioplasty, Arterial Stent, Nephrostomy and Biliary Procedures.
